Today I have begun to post pictures and pages from Grandpa Bill’s Journal and log books he kept for me during his war. The pictures I am finding where I can to illustrate the text.  October 14, 1942 is the date on page 1. A long time ago. Everyone in the family should read it. You will get to know your grandfather by doing so.

About the name Lloyd; Dad’s full name was William Lloyd Marr. He was born in England in 1917 where his mother was serving the war effort as a nurse. Of course his father was there as a medical doctor. His parents named him after the two heads of state in the Great War: David Lloyd George, Prime Minister of England, and Kaiser Willhelm of Germany.

As a boy in Langley he was called Lloyd. It seems that the Marr’s used their children’s second names rather than the first. But after the war and Dad moved to Toronto with TCA (now Air Canada) people began to call him Bill. It was possible to tell how far back his friends went by the name they used when talking to him.

I know I am jumping around with this project, doing a bit here and a bit there, but it is very much a project that proceeds as the spirit moves me and as the time permits. Be patient. It is good for the soul!

Eventually I want this to grow into a complete history of Grandpa. I got to thinking about this one day because I know him but in twenty years and when there are another generation of children growing up people will not know him. And as time goes by and history buries him further, people will forget this very fine man. This is my attempt to prevent that.
