A Walk With Joe

Susan and her girlfriends, of which there are many, have a birthday club. They go out for lunch to celebrate each of their birthdays with cake and flowers. This results in several lunches a year during which time I am left alone. It is quality time with myself which usually involves pasta, pancakes or some other forbidden delight.

Walking the Shoreline Trail from Rocky Point Park there is a small creek running into the head of Burrard Inlet.

Susan and I were at Joe and Christina’s a couple of weeks ago and Joe suggested that he and I go for breakfast on the days the birthday club meets which I thought was a great idea. So our first breakfast was at the Coquitlam Grill where we had a great breakfast. And, as chance would have it, today was the next meeting of the club so we went out again.

This time, however, I had to wait for a phone appointment with my doctor so we decided to meet for lunch at Rocky Point Park. Turns out it was a great idea.

We met at 11:30 at Rocky Point but the fish and chips stand was closed until noon so we went for a walk first along the Shoreline Trail. This is a trail that follows the shoreline of the inlet and goes all the way around the end and on to Old Orchard Park on the other side of the inlet. We walked to the end of the inlet where the way was blocked for work on the trail and we could go no further. So we turned around and walked back to Rocky Point. It was then after noon and PaJoe’s Fish and Chips was open and waiting for us.

Walking thru Rocky Point Park towards the shoreline trail we passed this couple having a picnic by the water.

The shoreline trail passes through some heavy bush with some decent sized trees. Why is it that a path through the trees is so restful? Even this little patch of forest is a wonderful escape from the world.

We both enjoyed two pieces of cod with chips and a coffee. Delicious! Well, maybe not the coffee so much. But we had a great lunch sitting outside in the warm spring sunshine. It was a really great day!

After lunch we walked across the road to the Parkside Brewery for a pint of beer. On the way out there was a chap with a Canon Camera and I went over and started to chat about cameras. But somehow we got onto music. That happens when Joe is around and it turned out that this chap was also into music. They hit it off real well but it was all over my head. I am not musical enough I guess.

This is what two pieces of cod with chips and coffee looks like. The batter was crisp and, best of all, they did not overcook the fish. It was moist and tender and very tastey.  The fries appeared to have been fresh cut with skin on. The best kind!  Now the coffee, well, the less said the better. But all in all, it was a great breakfast and I intend to go back for a repeat.

Joe and I walking on the shoreline trail. We did not see any bears, well, other than this sign. So disappointing!

And that was my walk with Joe today. It was a little thing but it is these small things that make life enjoyable. I am looking forward to the next meeting of the birthday club.
