Before the Cabin<\/h1>\n

Before the Cabins appeared on Valdes it was a Pristine Wilderness, quiet, remote, isolated.<\/h3>\n

The truth is, I don\u2019t remember how I first came to the Island. I believe Dad and I flew over having chartered a flight from the river on the south side of the airport. It was later that we were able to use a small boat kept by a friend in the bay on the Indian lands at the end of Galiano Island. When we started going over the only cabin was the one at the head of Starvation Bay just up from the spine of rock that juts into the Bay. On our first trips over we stayed there. Originally Dad knew most of the owners through Lloyd Detweiller (everyone called him “Det”) his friend from his University days.<\/div>\n

Dad watching our plane leaving Oyster Bay. This may be our first time over because he has my briefcase which would have had our maps and stuff in it. After the first trip or two we didn\u2019t carry maps and so on because we had found the corner pins for our lot.<\/p>\n

At the north end of Galiano Island there was a bay on the Indian Reserve that had a fishing float, general store and gas dock. This is where the small aluminum boat and 10 hp motor was kept that we used later. This was just at the tail end of the days of big fishing in the gulf. By 1980 this place was gone because the fishing fleets all disappeared.<\/p>\n

I much prefer the Valdes I remember to the one now. With all the development the magic is gone.<\/p>\n

It was a beautiful place, quiet, isolated, peaceful. It was so much my childhood! Just looking at this pictures brings me happiness.<\/p>\n

It was harder getting to the Island, but when you were there you seemed to be in the wilderness.<\/p>\n

We used the aluminum boat several times out of this bay and we bought supplies at the store on the dock, although it was not very well stocked. In those days there was also a general store at the Spanish Hills dock a few kilometers to the South. Dad and I went over several times by chartered plane as well. This was before GHLU.<\/p>\n

This is the front of the property before we built anything. It is rugged and has no beach but that has meant that we have little traffic either. All in all, it was a good choice of location.<\/p>\n

Our first few trips to the island were simply exploring. The salal was so much thicker that you had trouble walking anywhere off the shore. Along the water was the only way we had to move any distance and it was not easy. Dad cut the first trail into Oyster Bay but that ran half way along the shore and then cut into the bush and ran roughly parallel to the shore several yards in. Then it came out of the bush for about 30 yards before plunging back into the bush. It was still difficult.<\/p>\n

He cut the interior trail later when he was building the cabin. That was the trail that went from behind the cabin and came out in the meadow at the head of Oyster Bay. That trail we use to this day.<\/p>\n
