Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6

very inexpensive all-purpose zoom for full-frame camera

At the time I first wrote this piece on this lens I had two copies of this lens and assumed that they were identical. But when I got them out together I realized that they were very different. And so I began a little research and came to realize that this single little lens has a complex history.

Canon produced eight versions of this lens from 1991 through 1999 for their EOS line of SLRs. There was an L series copy which I am not dealing with here, other than to say, as might be expected, it is the superior version in every way.

All of the remaining iterations were used as the kit lens for various cameras at one time or another.

Canon calls this lens the Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6. This is a very inexpensive “kit” lens of all plastic construction, even down to the lens mounting rings. It is very light to hold.

Canon produced eight iterations of the lens from 1989 to 1999. This model was introduced in September of 1996.

The lens barrel extends when focusing or zooming and rotates when focusing.
