The Night Market

On the 19th, which was our first full day in Palm Springs, we heard there was a street market in downtown Palm Springs. When we got there we found a large section of Palm Canyon Drive right through the downtown  blocked off and a street party in progress.

While we were walking along Susan and Adele came across Sonny Bonno just sitting enjoying the evening. He was very gracious and posed for a picture for us.

The 19th of February was our first full day in Indio at Adele’s home. We spent most of the day tidying up the place. I cut some trees and bush that were encroaching on the house for Adele and Susan helped her washing and cleaning the dust accumulation since her last visit.

Susan and I then went for a walk around the neighborhood and got reacquainted with the community. It is still as lovely as we left it if not more so.

At dinner Adele said that there was a street market in town and so we agreed to go and check it out later in the evening.

After we finished dinner we drove into downtown Palm Springs to check out this market. We had no trouble finding parking on the street and walked over to Palm Canyon Drive which is normally the heart of the downtown shopping district.

We found the street blocked off and filled with vedores stalls along both sides. There were food booths offering Greek, Japanese or Salvadorian cuisine, hamburgers on grills and the sweet smell of frying onions everywhere. People were selling crafts, jewellery, leather work, and there were clothing stalls. The girls had a great time going over the dresses and blouses in great detail.

The evening was cool but we were dressed for it so it was very pleasant. We spent a couple of hours walking up and down the several blocks of the market.

In one of the booths along the street Susan and Adele found this dress with really large sequins. It would actually look good on one however it was in a wrong size. But Susan was tempted, I could tell!

I found a hat for Susan in one of the shops but she felt she would not use it veery much. I though it suited her personality!

Just before we left we came upon the final wonder of the evening: Marilyn! There was a large, really large, statue of Marilyn Monroe towering even above most of the trees. She was in the icon pose from “The Seven Year Itch” where the subway trains below blew her dress up. It was actually very well done.

I took a picture of the girls standing beside her, well sort of, to give an idea of the scale of her. This is quite the tourist attraction.

There was all kinds of great looking food available and it filled the air with delicious aromas. We finally settled on Greek lamb donair which was fantastic!

This booth was selling fresh dates, which are grown locally, and they had stuffed them with sweets like nuts. Adele bought some and we ate them as we walked along. They were really good!
