Late last week I received a notice from Lou Morocco that he was going to be playing at “the Shipyards” which was a new one on me. Looking into it a little I found that it was to be part of the Christmas Market beside the Quay at the foot of Lonsdale in North Vancouver. That woke me up. My God, it is Christmas again and another year is gone.

Susan and I enjoy Lou’s music and we tend to follow him to his varius venues and this time there was the added bonus of a Christmas Market. I talked it over with Susan on Saturday and we had pretty well decided that we would go when I got a call from Sherry asking if we were going. So we agreed to meet the next day to listen to Lou. And, as always, Susan took her dance shoes just in case.

The traffic was heavy for a Sunday afternoon and when we got to lower Lonsdale Avenue it was really bad. There was nowhere to park and the sidewalks were crowded with people. Apparently the Christmas market had just opened a few days before and people were flocking to it. Lou began to play about 3:00 but we did not arrive until almost 4:00 with all of the people and traffic.

The setting was really nice. The area had actually been an old ship yard where they built and repaired boats. But now it was an open area that extended out over the water. For the Market small sheds had been built for the vendors and there were very nice decorations laid out. Across the water was the City of Vancouver and as the sun set the lights came on and it was really very beautiful.

The setting for the Christmas Market was beautiful. As the sun set the City of Vancouver lit up across the harbour.

Lou and Stefanie were already singing when we arrived. Sherry was keeping a bench warm for us and we sat down to listen and chat.

They had set up Lou and Stefanie in a shed like the other vendors but they could have done better with the lighting.

Susan and Sherry are on the right in yellow and red talking and listening to the music. Susan had her dance shoes in her bag but there was really no opportunity for dance. There were too many people crowding in front and lots of toddlers.

The Christmas Market was nice. There was lots of locally made craft foods, candy, coffee. Almost no cheap import stuff from Asia which was nice to see. Unfortunately Susan and I have been spoiled by the Christmas Markets of Budapest and Vienna which are extravagant and go on for street after street. This market, however, is a good beginning and from the crowds that were there it seems a popular event.

We found Lou and Stefanie and there was Sherry waiting for us. Susan sat with her to talk and listen to Lou while I had a chance to wander around looking at the booths.

Later the three of us went for a walk around the market and over to the outdoor skating rink which was thronged with people. I was really impressed with the whole thing and it is worth a second trip. Low will be playing every Sunday so I am sure we will go again. But we’ll take the bus!

In the middle of the market was a big Christmas Tree that must have been 25 to 30 feet tall !

A Christmas Wreath

By the time we took this picture it was getting late and there is almost no light to take this picture.

We arrived as the afternoon was waning and the light was slowly fading. Smart phones have great cameras but they have their limits. These pictures are taken in lighting that was challenging for any camera and so, although the pictures give a wonderful view of the event, they lack clarity and detail when you try to zoom in. I should have taken a real camera for these pictures. However, you use what you have with you.

After we saw enough we walked over to Anatoli for calamari, greek salad and baklava. It was a perfect end to a visit to our first Christmas Market of the season. Next weekend the Mercato de Natale at the Italian Center.
