Take Me out to the Ball Game

This past Thursday, that would be the 25th of May, Sam’s baseball team had a game at a park in Vancouver. I had been after Sam to tell when her games were so I could go and take pictures. I wanted pictures of Sam but I also wanted practice with photographing moving subjects. So Susan and I went to watch Sam play ball.

Susan with Sam and a teammate of Sam’s. Susan is wearing one of Sam’s team jerseys but, no, she was not playing.

We found the park not far from the Croatian Cultural Center just off Commercial Drive. By the time we got there it was after 6:30 in the evening and the sun was getting low in the sky and it was behind tall fir trees so the diamond was in shadow. So the light was not great. Tough, but that is why they call it practice!

The game was already in progress when we arrived so I got right to work. Susan did not know the rules of the game so we spent time going over them. That is when I realized that, actually, baseball is a complicated game. Having grown up with it I never thought so but when I tried to explain it to Susan, and saw the blank looks on her face, I saw that it was not easy to fathom.

Sam was pitching for her team so I had lots of great opportunities to take pictures. Looking over the pictures I took it is obvious I have a lot to learn about fast moving subjects. Keeping Sam in focus while she ran proved to be more challenging than I expected. It I am going to have to go back and read my camera’s instruction book.

The sun was behind the trees so the ball diamond was in the shade which made for high ISO values.

And that was our evening at the ball game. It was fun to watch the girls. They were having a great time if the noise was any indication. As it turned  out, Sam’s team won. But somehow I don’t think that was the goal for the evening. It seems to me that, judging from the enthusiasm the girls displayed, the goal was to have  fun on a summer evening.
